Detox Diet : Cleansing The Body

A detox diet is a short term diet that is used to cleanse all harmful materials from the body.

This can include food additives, chemicals and environmental contaminants.

While many detox diets only allow liquids, there are also options to include specific types of foods.

These diets are often very high in natural fibre, fruits, vegetables or unprocessed types of foods that allow the body to eliminate build up materials in the digestive system.

They are also used when starting any type of diet regime to help to curb cravings and increase the effectiveness of a low carb, low calorie (check our 1200 low calorie diet) or lifestyle change type of diet plan.

Whilst these diets are often very restrictive in their menu planning they are also meant to be short term, making them easy to follow.

Fruit Juice Detox Diets

Fruit juice types of diets are very popular. Different diets include a variety of fruit juice options including lemonade, grapefruit juice, beet juice and various fruit and berry juice combinations.

These diets often restrict any type of food intake during the diet plan.

Fruit juice is consumed on a regular basis, usually with at least 8 additional glasses of water per day.

Some diets refer to a fruit juice diet as a mono fruit diet since only one type of fruit is consumed over the detox component.

Raw Foods Diet

A very popular type of diet includes the majority of the intake of foods be in a natural and raw form.

The typically foods found on this type of diet include green and leafy vegetables (more on green diet) , fresh fruits, whole unsalted nuts, legumes, sprouted beans and lentils, seeds such as pumpkin or sunflower as well as extra virgin olive oil and flaxseed oil.

Vegetables can be seasoned with fresh herbs and seasonings.

Dairy products, meats, eggs, refined grains and any type of sugars, artificial sweeteners of processed foods have to be completely eliminated from the diet.

Carbonated drinks, caffeinated drinks, alcohol, hydrogenated oils and salt is also prohibited while on the diet.

Diuretic Diet

The diuretic diet is designed to increase the consumption of specific foods that stimulate the natural body function of the kidney. These diets all include drinking at least 8 large glasses of water a day and restricting foods consumed.

Foods that are seen as beneficial to the cleansing action of the kidney include watercress, asparagus, melons, parsley and artichoke.

Unlike the raw foods detox diet those on the diuretic diet can consume coffee, tea and some artificially sweetened sodas.

Foods that are avoided on the diuretic diet include meats, soy products, dairy products, refined grains, starchy foods and alcohol.

Following a detox diet is a great way to jump start your diet or help get over a dieting plateau.

It is important to only stay on these diets as recommended and to carefully monitor your health at all times.

Talking with your doctor before starting this kind of diet is recommended, especially if you have any current health conditions or are pregnant or nursing.
