Many people are not aware that they may have this illness because many of the symptoms seem so harmless.

Diabetes Mellitus

MeSH definition: "A heterogeneous group of disorders that share glucose intolerance in common".

There are three main types of Diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes, Insulin-Dependent
  • Type 2 Diabetes, Non-Insulin-Dependent
  • Gestational Diabetes.

About 2 percent of the general population suffers from this disease. In some population groups the incidence of Type II is much higher and increasing.

Common Diabetes Symptoms

Diabetes symptoms could be any one or more of the following:

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Increased fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Blurry vision

If you experience any of these diabetes symptoms and you believe you have a risk of getting the disease, see your doctor urgently.

Recent studies indicate that the early detection of these diabetes symptoms and treatment can decrease your chance of developing this disease.

Diabetes: Proper Nutrition and Exercise Works

Proper nutrition and exercise are cornerstones in the management of this disease and weight loss. Many diabetics find that they are also faced with an overweight problem, (and many overweight people do not realize they are at risk of getting it). Losing weight and proper nutrition are essential in controlling this disease, which is the most common disease of the endocrine system.

Diabetes Prevention

Some of us are at greater risk than other of getting Type II, for the following reasons:

  • having a family history of this disease
  • being obese or overweight
  • inadequate exercise
  • unhealthy or inadequate nutrition, so our body's cells do not receive enough essential macronutrients and micronutrients, which are crucial to our cells' daily fuctioning.

A key to preventing or delaying the onset of Type II is for you is to know the diabetes symptoms and to avoid becoming overweight. This you can achieve through healthy nutrition and adequate exercise, as discussed below.

Controlling Diabetes

As a diabetic you can lead an active, independent and fulfilling lifestyle through:

  • the careful control of your diet;
  • having regular exercise; and
  • insulin injections.

In controlling your illness or your weight, correct nutrition is absolutely essential. Without the proper nutrients, controlling this disease becomes a losing battle.

Exercise

Another excellent way of controlling your weight is through exercise. Exercise can help keep you from getting Type II, or delay it's onset.
