Gestational Diabetes

MeSH definition of Gestational Diabetes:

"Either symptomatic diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance induced by pregnancy but resolved at the end of pregnancy. It does not include previously diagnosed diabetics who become pregnant (PREGNANCY IN DIABETICS)".

This is a temporary type appearing during some pregnancies.

However, if not treated, problems can occur for both mother and child, such as:

  • Women with this condition may deliver large babies requiring surgery instead of natural delivery,
  • Both the mother and baby run the future risk of getting Type 2
  • These babies are at higher risk for Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS),(i.e. difficulty in breathing).
  • The babies are more likely to be obese or very overweight as children or adults, with the increased risk of other health problems These babies are also at higher risk of getting diabetes, as they grow older.
