Scarsdale diet : a low calorie plan to lose weight
Scarsdale diet : As an American cardiologist treating Vietnam veterans, Scarsdale noticed that although these army members had had little to eat (low calorie diet) during the war, they suffered less from cardiovascular diseases than the average well fed person (high calorie diet). This diet was very popular in the 80s and the 90s. Basics of the diet : -No alcohol nor sweetened drinks -No food between meals with the exceptions of carrots and celery -Drinks allowed : black coffee, tea, water, sparkling water -Only use lemon and vinegar in salads -Vegetables have to be prepared only with lemon -Low fat meat has to be cooked without oil nor butter -max. 2 slices of bread daily -one glass of wine or light beer max -Stop eating when you are no longer hungry -Use this diet during 2 weeks max -Renew this diet every 2 weeks Forbidden food on this diet : -Sugar (only use low calorie sweetener) -Potatoes, pasta, and all food produced from flour -High-fat dairy products -Jam, desserts and other sweet food. Only fruits Between 2 cycles of the Scarsdale Diet, you should eat : -carrots and celery -low fat meat (incl. pork), fresh or frozen fish grilled without using oil / butter -crabs and shellfish without rich sauces -eggs -low-fat cheese (goat’s milk) -fruit and vegetables (all kinds) Under this diet, you should quickly lose weight, eating proteins and avoiding sugar and fat. All the food mentioned could be eaten without restriction.
Weakness : This diet is very restrictive and can lead to exhaustion. It should not be followed over an extensive period of time.
