Stevia is one of the newest discoveries in the ongoing search for a low carbohydrate , low calorie, low chemical option to adding that touch of sweetness to tea, coffee, desserts and other food items.

Stevia, unlike other so called artificial sweeteners is completely natural and contains no harmful chemicals, ingredients or additives.

What Is Stevia?

Stevia is actually one of a type of plant within the same plant family as the common sunflower. Stevia grows across most of Western North America and through to the tropical and subtropical areas of South America.

Stevia rebaudiana is the species most commonly used to make the natural sweetener known as Stevia.

Stevia is approximately 300 times as sweet as sugar but has no calories, no carbohydrates and will not cause spikes in blood sugar levels. This has made this herbal sweetener popular with both diet programmes as well as for diabetic patients.

Although a native southwestern United States and South American plant, Stevia was first commercially cultivated in Japan. The Japanese were looking for a crop quality plant that could be harvested to replace artificial sweeteners that had been linked to significant health risks.

The result was a manufacturing process that created Stevia. Some European Union countries as well as the United States banned the import or production of Stevia as they reported there was not enough research completed on the potential health risks and side effects of using the natural sweetener.

Most countries have now reversed this ban and Stevia or stevia containing products are now readily available.

Stevia can be used sprinkled on desserts on fruits or in any type of cooking or baking. It can also be added directly to tea, coffee or lemonade or other beverages for a natural, sweet taste without any calories or carbohydrates.

It can also be used in combination with non-calorie flavourings to create your own flavoured water. Unlike the artificial sweeteners most people find the product to leave no aftertaste or odd taste with specific foods.

Since it is so much sweeter than sugar less is required in cooking and baking and recipe ingredient proportions have to be modified for Stevia if they call for regular white or brown sugar.

Possible Side Effects Of Stevia

Most people have no side effects or negative experiences when using Stevia as a sweetener. However, some people may find that they are sensitive to the product if consumed in larger quantities.

This is also true for sugar or artificial sweeteners. Typical negative sensations include nausea and bloating as well as possible spikes in blood sugar levels with extremely heavy consumption.

In addition it is important to keep in mind that the foods or beverages that you are using the Stevia with can also cause an increase in weight gain if not counted in your daily calorie or carbohydrate intake.
